Back injury prevents normal bike riding, any other models available?

18 Mar

I got in a pretty bad skiing accident in 2002, and have since not been able to comfortably ride a regular style bike. I’m not sure if a recumbent would help, since it’s mainly the seat of the bike that causes discomfort. (I fractured my pelvis in 5 places.) Does anyone know of a different style bike seat or affordable bike that I might be able to use? I live in Missoula, MT if anyone knows of any helpful bike shops. Thanks!

Recumbent bikes have a completely different style seat, kind of like a mesh fording chair. Can’t think of anything more comfortable than that.

I’d have to second D’Artagnan, a recumbent would probably be your best bet. The geometry on a bent would distribute your body weight differently- which might solve your problem.

There are lots of different kinds of ‘bents, look here for a good catalog and good advice:

Also consider the new “flat foot” or “crank forward” style of bikes like these, it’s similar to a regular bike but you’re sitting upright.

Look on E-bay for recumbents. I got a pretty nice one for $600 and enjoy riding it as a second bike.
