I have some avid disc brakes that have basically stopped working even though there is plenty of pad left. In fact it is hard to see any wear at all on them.
At what point can you tell that a brake pad is no good besides them not working.
Is there some indicator on the pad that shows that the braking surface is no good?
I am riding a recumbent trike on the street and I wonder how long is a brake suppose to last because these brakes have not lasted very long it seems.
Is there something to look for to get longer lasting brake pads? Are the ‘organic’ pads as good or worse than those who make no mention of being ‘organic’ < what ever does that mean? organic brake pads?
I have AVID BB-5 brakes/pads is there any thing I can do to restore braking power to these pads that seem to have a lot of braking surface left. It is a shame to throw away these $15+ pads that seem like they should have lasted longer.
These are disc brake pads and contact a disc rotor and not the rim of the wheel.
I want to make sure that is made clear.
These are bicycle disc brakes and not the ‘rubber’ type that make contact with the bicycle rim. With those even after you have worn past the indicators that show a safety margin *(generally by wearing away some raised surface or in some cases to a color differentiation) the brakes will still work fine.
The brake pads I am referring to have a surface like that of automobile brake surfaces.
With automobiles there is an indicator of sorts that shows the point of safe wear and even if past that point the brakes still work. It is that past that point on automobiles and you risk damaging the brakes an expensive repair.
