Need weight loss help, not diet advice?

04 Jun

Okay, I know how to eat healthy. I have already begun cooking all my meals at home, doing the right thing food wise to help me in weight loss. I’m already eating more fruit and veggies, and less meat and correct size portions and eating things like fresh fruit and air popped pop corn for desserts and snacks. I even invested in a small cooler and have begun bringing my own healthy lunch to work and healthy snacks to eat during the day. I’ve got the eating/food part down. That I don’t need to tweek. Okay..whew.

Now, I’m 420 pounds. I know I need to loose weight, but I’m not sure where to begin. I know my ideal weight is 130-140 pounds but right now my goal is to get down to 300 pounds, then I’ll make a new goal to drop another 100 pounds and so forth.

Exercise wise, I have no idea where to begin. I’m doing a little bit of yoga (the best I can!) and I need to know what kind of workouts can I do? What are some good workout videos that I can buy? Should I get 2 or 5 pound weights? I own a set of 2 pound weights but a lot of videos suggest 5 pounds. Is that okay to use the 2 pound weights for a while? Which of the biggest loser videos are the best to do? BTW-I already own the Biggest loser cookbook and have been using it a lot.

Please don’t suggest things like bike riding or swimming. I have no place to store a bike in my apartment when I’m not using it, I don’t have access to a pool and I can’t find a suit in my size-I’ve looked everywhere or walking. I’m already walking briskly 5-10 minutes 3 times a week, which is all I can handle.

What about Richard Simmons tapes? He seems pretty geeky and out there to me. Has his tapes helped anyone loose weight?

His workout tapes, at least the VHS versions-are pretty cheap on Amazon and eBay.

I have both a DVD/VCR combo player, so it doesn’t matter if I get workout tapes on DVD or VHS.

I prefer working out at home because I feel intimidated going into a gym right now because of my size. What are some good workout tapes I can do at home? Thanks!!
to the first poster about fad diets: if fad diets are so bad then why are telling me to try one?

I’m not stupid. I know fad diets are bad. BTW would you or another poster please tell me what part of my question makes you think I’m trying a fad diet.

Which bike is better for weight loss?

23 May

I am interested in losing a little weight and toning up a bit, but I don’t want a short term thing. I was ready to buy a recumbent bike to work out indoors because it is getting cooler and i won’t have an excuse not to use it. Although I saw on biggest loser the trainer said to get a spin bike. I am not sure what that is but he said that it is the best workout u can get? Any suggestions for me? I am strictly asking about the bikes. I already know about diet.

How many minutes per day do I need to work on my recumbent bike to see weight loss?

15 May

I am a female in her early 30’s, 5ft. 2, 165lbs (oh no!!!) who just bought a recumbent bike. I needed something non-jarring due to some upper vertebrae degeneration I have. How many minutes per day do I need to be on this bike to see some weight loss results? My diet is the typical American diet, though I am switching to more baked foods and less sodas. Would like to start off with a solid excersise program first, then modify my diet gradually day by day. I have yo-yo’d so many times in the past, with diet pills, starving, and what not, and just want to be healthy this time. Drastic is not for me anymore, as I wish to preserve my health and not be jarring or harmful to my body. Thank you.

Is my weight loss goal achievalbe?

13 May

I started exercising on 7/10/08. I do 30 minutes of cardio which I alternate between a recumbent exercise bike and a treadmill each day. (mostly treadmill). I push myself as hard as I can. No lack of sweat. I also throw in 5 sets of pushups and crunches/leg lifts every other day. I am a 40 year old male, 5′ 10″ and weighed 226 on 7/10/08. I am now down to 221 on 7/28/08. I cut out junk food. I eat healthy foods 3-4 times a day and make all the necessary cuts (like butter) as possible. Can I get to 185 by Christmas at this pace?

Will 15 minutes of cardio on a recumbent bike 4 times daily help me with weight loss?

06 May

I know the longer the workout the better, but I am easily distracted by my 3 year old and cannot manage more than 15-20 minutes at one time. Can doing this 4 times a day equate to a workout appropriate for weight loss?

recumbent bikes – muscle gain vs. weight loss?

04 May

I recently began using the recumbent bike machine at my gym. With my history of hiking, dancing and long-distance running I already have very large leg muscles. I’m wondering if a recumbent bike machine can help produce leaner muscles as well as burn fat. If so, what type of routine should I use? Currently I am on level 5 resistance and biking at between 16-18 mph. For weight loss rather than muscle gain (as I don’t want these thigh muscles any larger!) should I have a higher resistance and steady pace or a lower level and faster pace?

Any and all information will be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
Bob A – thank you! true, while those activities do not usually promote bulky muscles, i spent a long period of time in a wilderness survival camp in which we ate high-protein and hiked anywhere between 6 to 12 miles a day. that aside, i appreciate your information and will get on it immediately! ^_^

Weight loss for 15 year old girl?

14 Apr

I am a 5′4” 15 year old girl and I currently weigh 113. My normal weight is around 108 pounds but I have been pretty lazy this summer and not eating the most healthy foods. At home I have a recumbent bicycle, an Ab Lounge, hula hoops, and a few other basic items. I have strong arms, but my stomach and thighs are an issue. How can I get back to 108 pounds or maybe even 106 without drastic dieting or becoming a member of a gym?

I’ve been working out for 2 hrs/day 6 days/ week for almost 2 mos.- anything I can do to maximize weight loss?

13 Apr

I start off with a 5 minute elliptical warmup, then stretching, then 30-45 minutes of cardio (elliptical interval training, rowing machine, bike), then circuit training with weights, which I do a vigorous workout with, and between 8-12 reps, 3 sets each. Then I do about 10 minutes of interval elliptical training and 10 minutes of the recumbent bike How can I maximize my wieght loss?

Anyone try The Formula 40/30/30 by the Daousts for weight loss?

30 Mar

I need to lose about 65lbs to be at a healthy weight. I’ve read reviews on Amazon about this book, but not much on actual results and tips.

As far as exercise, I can do “some” cardio, but I’m limited to what I can do with weights due to disc problems in my neck, which also affect my arm. So lifting weights is almost completely out since anything I do with my arms affects my neck :( . I can’t do any bouncy cardio stuff, but I did recently purchase a stationary recumbent bike. I use to run years ago before I got hurt and loved it, but now that’s one of the things I’m told I can’t do anymore :(

I really, really need to lose this weight. I’m a 39 yr old female, 5′3″ and weigh 200. My 40th birthday is in February and I would really love to lose most of that 65 by then!

Please don’t respond with crap solicitations!! I will report you as spam. I’m looking for people who have honestly been through this before. I’m starting to get really depressed and am looking for honest suggestions.

Thanks.

Does a recumbent bike really help with weight loss?

22 Mar

I’ve been using an eliptical machine every other day. On the day between, I’m using a recumbent bike for 30 minutes. Although I work up a mild sweat, I still feel like it’s just giving my legs a workout and not the rest of my body. Are recumbents good for cardio?
PS- I should mention that the bike is stationary. Riding a bike in this NC humidity just isn’t my bag, baby.

Weight loss – water, recumbent bike?

22 Mar

I’m 5′5″ and weigh 237 lbs. My weight usually was between 180-200 lbs. until I had my son, and now I just gained weight like crazy. I want to get to lose at least 77 lbs.

I never really drink water, but my question is – I bought a recumbent stationary bike today, one that counts calories burned/distance/pulse/time. I plan on riding 2 miles in the morning, 2 miles in the afternoon, and 2 miles at night. Totaling 6 miles a day, drinking 80 oz. of water a day, how much weight do you think I’ll lose and in what time frame?
Thanks, I KNOW I’m “obese” .. I wasn’t always, but if you have kids you know how difficult it is to lose baby weight while taking care of a newborn, especially in the winter when you can’t go outside much. I didn’t say I was “overweight” .. just said I want to lose weight.
