What should my BPM be when exercising?

21 May

I’m extremely overweight and just started to ride a recumbent bike to help me lose weight. What should my bpm be when exercising, and how do I know I’m pushing it too hard or not hard enough. I don’t know what my bpm is when resting but today while doing my program my bpm got up to 137. (My bike has a thing on it that will take it while working out). Anyway, I forget how to figure this out since it’s been so long. Thanks in advance for our advice.
Should have said, “Thanks for YOUR advice”.
My resting BPM is 70.
‘BPM’ stands for Beats per Minute.

If the cheaper the bicycle the more weight it can support what price should I spend on a bike?

05 May

I weigh 270 pounds. How much should I spend on a bike? I probably will lose 10 pounds of weight a month if I keep exercising.

Its going to be a mountain bike since I live on dirt roads but I will ride on the highway to different towns.

I honestly have not exercised in about 8 years. So how should I start off and get into shape?

04 May

I am tired of the excuses. I cry about being overweight but won’t get up off my fat a$$. That is going to change.
I got an exercise bike given to me and I bought a pedometer and some 3lb weights.
Today I rode my exercise bike 3 times at 1.5 minutes each (moderate pace). I couldnt do more than a minute and a half at first. But then later I did it for 15 minutes straight at a moderate pace. At first it is hard but then you get used to it.
How long should I ride my exercise bike every day? I need to lose about 40 lbs. And how should I lift the weights I have? I am starting off with 3 lbs and then I will buy more heavy ones as I get stronger. And when it warms up outside (if it ever does) I am going to go walking. It is about 10 degrees every day right now though. I am trying to find a cheap treadmill right now though. They are so expensive!
And I also have a mini trampoline I am going to start jumping on every day. How long should I do that for?

HELP! Every Bike I get keeps breaking down right away and I need to know what kind of bike I should buy?

28 Apr

Every time I get a seemingly decent, but cheap used bike, I ride it for a week or a few hours and then something breaks on it, and it’s such a hassle to have my grandpa constantly nagging at me, wanting to fix it for me, then he fixes it then it breaks again in a day, it’s ugly.

I don’t know how to fix bikes myself, I’m not mechanically inclined by any means. I love biking however, and I desperately need exercise, and I get tired of jogging, and biking is key. However, my dreams are always cut short by bike problems.

Anyway, I’ve been wondering if there’s some kind of bike that you can get that actually doesn’t easily break, and that I could ride for miles and miles up hills and what not, and be totally at bliss?

If I went out and got a heavy duty mountain bike or something like that for 500 or a thousand bucks, would it be worth it? Or is there a good less expensive kind of bike I should get?

Also, I get annoyed with multispeed bikes, because there’s always an annoying clicking sound, and it always seems to try to shift by itself when I’m going up a hill or something and it’s annoying. Is this just because all the bikes I’ve ridden are crappy? Or should I get a 1 speed bike?

Where is a good place to shop for bikes? I’d really like to try the bike out first for a time, before commiting to buy, like taking a car for a testdrive first, is there a store someplace where I can do that?

I’m in the dark here people, and I need your help!

Any information will be greatly appreciated, and 10 points will be awarded to the best answer!

Which are the best Mountain Bikes I can buy? And specific parts I should buy? (Shocks, Frames, Etc..)?

25 Apr

My Plan:
I want to start mountain biking everyday so I can get exercise and stay in shape. I will ride 5+ miles a day and progressively increase the miles I ride. I do not want a road bike with skinny tires and curled handle bars. I’m looking to buy or build a Mountain Bike.

The Mountain Bike Must Include:
- Several gears for long distance riding and up-hills.
- Good and great shocks.
- Durable frame.

In your answer, please include any of the following:

- Brand names of good mountain bikes

- Brand names of bike parts (shocks, frames, tires, etc.)

- Prices (how much did you buy your bike for, how much were the parts (if any) that you put into the bike. If you built your own custom mountain bike.. how much were each part and the total amount you put into your bike.

- Specific Mountain Bikes (some brand names, for example Trek makes several different bikes. So go into specifics.

- Bikes I should avoid (Maybe you had a bad experience with certain bikes whether it be bad or cheap parts or durability problem with the bike)

- Additional Information (any other information that can be helpful or anything that I forgot to mention that will help me decide what kind of bike I should but or build)

- Custom Built Bikes (if you built your own bike, include what parts you have used, brand names, prices, colors, etc..)

If anyone chooses to answer this question you do not have to include all of the information I have asked for in your answer. You can simply name Mountain Bikes that you like or that you know are good. If you are really into biking or have a custom built bike, please include as much information on your bike as possible. You can also website links to specific bikes. Thank you everyone for helping me find the right Mountain Bike to buy or build! I appreciate everyone taking their time out to answer my question.

“Nothing compares to the simple pleasure of a bike ride.”
- John F. Kennedy
cycle guy: I’m mostly going to ride on roads, down to the beach. I live near woods where I might ride in, but I’m sticking to the roads mostly. I’ve ridden road bikes with thin tires, those bikes ride nice but I like the feel of Mountain Bikes.

I wanted to give as much information as possible so people wouldn’t answer just go to a bike shop. That’s easy to do, I’d rather ask people who love and enjoy riding.

My Budget is up to $1500. I’m not necessarily a beginner when it comes to riding, I used to ride all the time, it’s just been a few years and technology has changed. Thanks Again!

Should bicycle riders have to license their bike and have liability insurance?

14 Apr

For the safety and financial security of all road users Cycle Riders (Bicycle, Tricycle and Recumbent) should be required to be licensed road users with liability insurance, vehicle registration, and a state issued license plate affixed to the cycle.

Cyclists having no license, current plate, registration or not having insurance would incur the same penalty as a motor vehicle driver. The roads would be safer and road usage would be fair.
Some tricycles are large and not childrens toys.

Last century bicycles were licensed where I grew up.

A woman here in this town was hit by a high speed cycle rider without insurance a year ago and she is still having surgeries and medical bills.

Cyclists often ignore or just don’t know the rules of the road.

The State needs safe roads for all users.

The fee revenue would be of use to the State as well.
Riders under the age of 18 would be exempt.

Should I buy a Harley -or- a Recumbent bike?

13 Apr

5 Years ago I sold my Harley Classic after15 years. (regretful circumstances). Now I am in a position to get a replacement. I am going on 65 but am in great shape. I *was* a bicycle rider in the past.
There is *nothing* like a HOG! Indescribable feeling just to be able to say “yep, I ride a Harley”.
Could I replace the HOG with a bike and live with myself?

Does anybody own or ride a low-rider recumbent bike? If so, do you like it and should I buy one?

12 Apr

I have seen several people in my area riding them, they look much more comfortable than a regular bicycle, and if you fall you are close to the ground already!

I’m sure it gets asked a lot on here, but what brand of bike should i buy?

04 Apr

I mainly want a trail and exercise bike, something simple and 300-400$. Before I’ve only had used and cheap bikes nothing special. I once had a Trek and even though it was old (someone gave it to me) it still was a great bike in my opinon. I was thinking about going with a Trek again, is there any other brands I should be looking at or specific models?

I was also thinking about going steel frame to save some coin too is that a good idea or not. Thanks for taking the time!!!!

Why should I NOT buy a Sun Recumbent Tadpole or USX?

03 Apr

I want a recumbent trike. I am not wealthy. I test rode a Sun Tadpole & a Sun usx. It was fun, but things just did not seems to work as great as I would expect them to. I am pretty illiterate when it comes to talk about bike components. Please share your opinions on Sun recumbents &/or make other suggestions that won’t break the bank. I am a casual rider looking for a comfortable trike.

What should I look for when buying a bicycle?

02 Apr

I want to buy a basic bicycle in USA to be used on the roads mostly and bikepaths in the city. The objective being – convenience (biking to grocery store rather than walk), fun (biking on the biking path along the river) and exercise. I have used bikes before in my country but never geared. Also, the different names for the bikes here are confusing. Can you please suggest what kind of bike I will need for my purpose and what all should I look for in a decent but cheap bike?
